My First Kick Flip

The moment I tore open my eagerly awaited Christmas present, it was love at first sight. It was a brand new Pro skateboard. It was slim, sleek and as light as a feather. It had smooth jet black grip tape, wheels as yellow as bananas and a crazy, silver metallic graphic that looked like something from out of Star-Trek. At that magnificent moment my brain could only process one thing and that was to ride this board. As I put the skateboard on the ground the new smell of plastic filled the air, reassuring me this board was of excellent quality and was only meant to be ridden by the greatest. When I stepped on the board my shaky feet found their place immediately. I pushed off with one foot and WOOSH! I sped off down the street like a jet taking off. I felt like a king on this new board and decided to take it to a whole new level by attempting the death defying kick flip at the skate park.

When I got there I saw heaps of awesome skaters defying the laws of gravity, pulling off near impossible tricks. I had to prove myself to them. There was only one way I could achieve that and it wasn’t an easy thing to do. I too, had to defy the laws of gravity by pulling off a kick flip. I went for it. I put both feet at the tail of the board, then slid my right foot up the smooth spine, hoping that I would pull off this hard trick. But no, I failed miserably with my board wildly flying off to the side instead. I tried this several more times. But still no luck. I was getting agitated now and I could see some other skaters snickering at me. I had to pull it off this time and I wasn’t going to fail. I slid my right foot up the spine of the board again and watched, flabbergasted as the board did a perfect rotation. It looked magnificent, like a frisbee rotating at super speed. I looked at my feet. They were sitting perfectly on my board. Yay! I had just landed my first kick flip. I was no longer a useless skater and I had proven myself as a real master of skating.

I can now do kick flips all the time. I have even moved on to harder tricks such as the hard flip. But no matter how many new tricks I learn, nothing will ever feel as satisfying as that first kick flip.
